Ms. Newman was born in Lenoir County on Jan. 4, 1926 to the late John Henry and Lucy Davis Daugherty. She received early education from the public schools of Lenoir County. A graduate of Elizabeth City State Teachers College, Ms. Newman served as an educator for more than 60 years and retired from the Lenoir County School System. Ms Newman loved to help people and she loved to cook, known for her fried chicken and collard greens, everyone loved her food.
She was a lifelong member and church mother at Sand Hill FWB Church where she served in several capacities, including Sunday school teacher and superintendent. More than anything Ms. Newman loved the Lord and always showed this love to everyone she met. She was a wonderful Sister, Mother, Aunt, Nana, G.G., Cousin and Friend. There are no words that can express how much she is loved and will be missed. If she could say anything to those she left behind it would be "don't cry for me but rejoice with me for I am at home with my Lord praising him in person!"
Cherishing her memories are two children Cynthia Y. Newman of Durham, N.C. and Kevin A. Newman of Houston, TX, two grandchildren Crystal J. Blue of Durham, N.C. and Darius Newman of Florida, one great-grandchild Ethan J. Blue of Durham, N.C., two sisters, Shirley D. Clark of Brooklyn, N.Y. and Alice D. Kimbrough of Jersey City, N.J. and a vast number of loving nieces, nephews, cousins and caring friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Thelma Daugherty and Nanette (Marie) D. Pope, one brother, John Milton Daugherty and one niece Linda D. Isler.
- I am home in Heaven dear ones; oh so happy and so bright. There is perfect joy and beauty in this everlasting light.
All the pain and grief is over, every restless tossing past; I am now at peace forever, safely home in Heaven at last.*
Professional, sympathetic, dignified, compassionate care and service entrusted to Loftin Memorial-J.B. Rhodes Funeral Home, 106 N. East Street, Kinston, NC.
