The celebration of her life will be held on Friday, July 26, 2013 at 12:00 noon at Faith Presbyterian Church, 2114 N Berkeley Blvd, Goldsboro, NC with Reverend Antonia Lawrence officiating. She will be laid to rest in the Washington Memorial Cemetery, Durham Lake Road, Dudley, NC. There will be a visitation held from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Faith Presbyterian Church. She was born to the late Lena Worrells and George Ivory Johnson in Wayne County on October 9, 1931. She was educated in the Wayne County Public Schools, and was joined in holy matrimony to Percy Newkirk, Jr., who preceded her in death. This union was blessed with one devoted son, William Percell. Emma loved family, friends and community. As a member of Faith Presbyterian Church, she served diligently as a deacon and in various other capacities which include the Presbyterian Women’s Organization and the choir. She attended Bible Study, Sunday School, and worship services on a regular basis. She loved gardening and shared her harvest with family and friends. She also liked to cook and sew. She worked in the Dudley post office, the Dudley Bank and the Dudley Christian Church. She also was a caregiver for many who were sick or disabled. She leaves to cherish her memory: her devoted son, William Percell Newkirk; her brother, David Lee Johnson, both of the home; four sisters, Rachel Ann Bryant, New Bern, NC; Leora Johnson, Frances Ann Johnson, and Betty Lou Johnson, all of New York; a grandson, William Jay Newkirk of East Orange, NJ; a granddaughter, Kelly Lamarr of Irvington, NJ; a great-grandson, William Jamir Newkirk, of East Orange, NJ; one aunt, Alberta Uzzell, of Eureka, NC; two sisters-in-law, Louise Broadhurst and Marie Newkirk; one brother-in-law, Clarence (Doris) Newkirk; a god-daughter, Beverly Brooks and children of Dudley; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. A professional, sympathetic, dignified and compassionate service has been entrusted to J.B. Rhodes Funeral Home and Cremations.
