Herbert James Tanner's Obituary
Goldsboro Retired Sr. Master Sgt. Herbert J. Tanner, 83 of 705 Simmons Street, passed on Thursday evening, March 14, 2013 at home surrounded by his family. The homegoing celebration will be held on Tuesday, March 19, 2013 at 11:00am from the St. James AME Zion Church. The interment with full military honors will follow in Wayne Memorial Park North, 1191 Old Grantham Road, Goldsboro, NC. There will be a visitation on Monday, March 15, 2013 from 2:00pm until 6:00pm with the family present from 5:00pm until 6:00pm in the J.B. Rhodes Jr. Memorial Chapel at J.B. Rhodes Funeral Home and Cremations. He was born on June 19, 1939 in Union County to Joe "Mack" and Christine Chambers Tanner. He attended Mecklenburg County schools, where he graduated from West Charlotte High School. He also attended Johnson C. Smith University, and received his Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Leo College. Mr. Tanner retired as senior master sergeant from the United States Air Force in 1982 with 27 years of service. He went to work at Eastpointe Human Services as a licensed clinical addictions specialist until his retirement in 2005. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Tanner of Goldsboro; a son, Reginald Tanner of Goldsboro; seven daughters, Henrietta Tanner, Rachel Tanner, Christine Spears and Cynthia Raiford of Goldsboro, Pamela Hinton and Wanda Jones of Savannah, Ga., and Janet Hudson of Dover, Del.; son-in-law, Travis Barden of Dudley; 19 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren. The final professional, sympathetic, dignified and compassionate care and service has been entrusted to J.B. Rhodes Funeral Home and Cremations.
