Mrs. Inez Howell Cox's Obituary
Goldsboro - Mrs. Inez Howell Cox, 102, passed on Tuesday, January 15, 2019 at the Goldsboro Assisted Living, Goldsboro, NC. The celebration honoring her life will be held on Saturday, January 19, 2019 at 2:30pm at St. John AME Zion Church, 584 Pecan Road, Dudley, NC with Pastor Mary R. Nixon officiating. She will be laid to rest at the St. John AME Zion Church Cemetery, 584 Pecan Road, Dudley, NC. There will be a viewing held on Saturday, January 19, 2019 from 1:30pm to 2:30pm at the church.
She was the daughter of the late Henry Howell and Viola Stevens Howell, was born in Selma, North Carolina on January 20, 1916. She departed this life peacefully, just 5 days before her 103rd birthday.
In August 1935, she married the late Earl Frank Cox, and they resided for over 20 years in Dudley, North Carolina before returning to her hometown of Selma, North Carolina. They had one daughter, Alice Earle, with whom she lived later in life for many years until age 97 in Goldsboro, North Carolina.
A devoted daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend she was affectionately called “Toot” by many. She was a long time, faithful member of Shiloh Primitive Baptist Church in Princeton, North Carolina and a regular worshiper at St John A.M.E. Zion Church, Dudley, North Carolina.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Thelma Howell and Viola “Doll” Howell, and two brothers, John Howell and Richard Howell.
Those left to cherish her memories are devoted daughter, Alice Atkinson now of Woodbridge, Virginia; three grandsons, Delton (Sherry) Atkinson of Durham, North Carolina, Thomas (Lovie) Atkinson of Buena Vista, Virginia, Darryl Atkinson of Hampton, Virginia; and two granddaughters, Judy (James) Best of Woodbridge, Virginia and Terryl Atkinson of Durham, North Carolina; nine great grandchildren including Terrence Atkinson of Goldsboro, North Carolina; six great great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
