She was educated at the Pikeville Training School in Pikeville, North Carolina and later met and married the late Chester Lee Sutton, Sr. of Fremont, North Carolina. God added to their union nine children, who were a major joy of her life. She taught them a godly principle, that no one of them was any greater than the other and instilled in them a strong work ethic. Mother Sutton taught her daughters to be ladies and to always conduct themselves in a proper manner.
God blessed her with a strong, independent, caring, and personable spirit. It was that loving and caring spirit that first impacted her immediate and extended family members and so many others over the years in her church, community, and various healthcare jobs. She retired from Wilson Memorial Hospital, Wilson, North Carolina and worked at WAGES Inc. in Goldsboro, North Carolina until her health declined at 86 years of age. She was an Honorary Norwayne Alumni Inc. Nonagenarian.
Above all, Mother Sutton received Christ on July 9, 1971. Being called of the Lord unto good works, she applied her hands to support her church and to be a blessing. In particular, she ministered to the spiritual wellbeing of the women according to Titus 2:3-5, which instructs, “ The aged women likewise,… that they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, to be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.”
Mother Sutton enjoyed cooking, especially collard greens, shopping, and one of her favorite pastimes was frequent visits to yard sales; she never met a stranger, just loved people! She was a fashion expert and a sharp dresser. Mother Sutton was lovingly called Ma, Momma, Grandma, Grandma Lula Mae, Mae, Aunt Mae, Miss Mae, Sister Mother, Chet’s wife, and the Fox.
