My sincerest condolences to the Smith family. I worked with J.O. back in the 80’s when we were both security officers for Guardsmark working at the Glaxo plant in Zebulon. For some reason, about a week ago I felt compelled to do an internet search for some of my former co-workers. I was quite stunned to come upon the obituary of J.O. He was always so fit and in good shape that I was sure he would outlive me. He was one of the best co-workers I ever had the pleasure of working with. We were both on the overnight shift and when we met we immediately hit it off. We were the same age, had the same morals and values and shared an offbeat sense of humor. We were always cracking each other up joking around but it never interfered with our job. We were clearly the premiere security pairing at Glaxo. The other security officers used to call us Crockett and Tubbs from the TV show Miami Vice but we told them no, we were more like Spenser and Hawk from the show Spenser for Hire. Its been over 30 years since I moved from North Carolina and have not been back since but I still think fondly of my time working with him. My uncle moved to Chapel Hill a few years ago and I have been planning to visit him. I had planned to look J.O. up when I was there. Sadly I waited too long but I will be sure to visit his grave. Goodbye friend.
